The Ak-Chin Indian Community came into existence in 1912 when President Taft signed a reservation declaration encompassing 47,600 acres, but the following year, it underwent a reduction to less than 22,000 acres. Their tribe established an independent government under the Indian Reorganization Act of 1934. In 1984, they secured water rights to the Colorado River through a federal settlement, a crucial development that enabled them to sustain their agricultural activities through irrigation.
The community’s primary and largest endeavor, Ak-Chin Farms, boasts 15,000 productive acres and ranks among the United States’ most significant farming communities. In 1994, they ventured into the gaming industry through a partnership with Promus/Harrah’s management, resulting in the establishment of a 72,000-square-foot casino.
Notably, the Ak-Chin Him Dak Eco-Museum stands as a pioneering living museum dedicated to preserving their culture, land, and heritage. This museum hosts the Him-Dak Celebration in April and the Native American Recognition Day Celebration in September, both of which celebrate the essence of their “way of life,” as denoted by the term “Him-Dak.”
